I have tried to do some research on this item, I bought it as I just loved how unusual it is. I have found many different ideas on the web this is just one.
This is one example- ANTIQUE PEWTER GLOBE containing a tobacco/ink well or tea caddy it is believed to dates from around the early 20th Century, circa 1930s, but please make up your own mind about this. The globe measures a...pprox 155mm tall and is made from pewter. It is a globe on a stand, and is marked out with the continents and lines of latitude and longitude and with oriental writing. This leads me to conclude that it may well be Chinese or Japanese in origin. The globe has a hinged lid which opens to reveal a separate pewter tobacco jar inside. This in turn can be lifted out of the globe. This is a fine example of its type and it would make a great display piece and be a nice addition to any collection. weight approx 640 grammes. Please see the photos for condition and type.
*** Please see in the photo it has some dents as pewter is a soft metal and also the hinge on the lid has broken on one side.****
