Vintage Disston Back Saw 16 Inch Blade 12 PPI

Vintage Disston Back Saw, 16 Inch Blade, 12 TPI. Condition is Used. The back has, " Cast Steel " stamped on it. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. Gang, this one just needs a little TLC !!! If I were to keep this, I'd do a good refurbishing ! The teeth feel pretty good as is. I would recommend carefully removing the handle. Gently score around the screws and medallion to prevent the wood chipping out when you push the bolts through. I would then remove all of the varnish from the handle.... I would soften up the sharp edges and then rub it down with three coats of boiled linseed oil using 0000 steel wool. Some even stain them ! Next moving on to the metal. I'd remove the back, ( not absolutely necessary ), the use of a vise makes this much easier, then using 320 grit sandpaper and mineral spirits or kerosene, remove all of the rust and accumulations of dirt, etc from the back and the blade. Best results achieved by using a sanding block and long strokes lengthwise. Try to avoid contact with the teeth if you don't plan on sharpening the saw ! Reinstall the back, insuring the blade is straight and true. You can polish the hardware bright and shiny if you wish, , , but most purests, simply clean them well with a toothbrush and dawn dish soap. Reinstall the handle, and enjoy your new back saw !!! This is an easy project, that anyone can do ! I've refurbished a complete set from the tiny 6" models, up to 22" ! They come out beautiful !!! To preserve the blade, I took a tin can. I cut it down to about 2.5"-3" tall. Take an old tee shirt, cut up into strips about an inch wider than the height of the can. I then roll the strips up as tightly as I can, keeping it neat and tidy, till the roll is large enough to fit tightly in the can with the edges of the fabric facing up. Then, I take oil and entirely soak the fabric. I also made a base for the whole setup to sit on to keep oil from seeping onto my bench ! Just before I use the saw, I swab both sides with the oil. It makes the friction minimal, the saw will easily glide through the wood. When finished. I wipe the saw clean, and reapply the oil for storage !!! This has worked for me for years !!! I can't honestly tell you how many saws I have !!! Once you've done this, you won't be able to wait to get your next one !!! Once you master controlling the handsaws, using wood planes and chisels, you will be amazed at what you can build, using only handtools !!! This saw, is a superb candidate for this project !!!
