RARE SHELLEY QUEEN ANNE VERSAILLES MILK JUG Or CREAMER & PLATE Af
Item History & Price
This is an early rare pattern that doesn'tshow up all that often. Here is the matching milk jug or creamerto the trio we listed with an additionalside plate. Both pieces are 'as found' (see Condition below) but still present well. Marked with a Registered number to the base- 723404 which is for Queen Anneshape. The fantastic pattern of colourful birds withcurly tails and fruit is officially called VERSAIL...LES but these pieces are not marked with the name. Pattern number is S 2058 which means theyare early seconds. According to the Shelley Club website in anarticle titled Too Good To Pass Up: “Seconds ware came aboutbecause a fault was found at the white ware stage of manufacture. Whiteware was produced when the pottery had been fired once (biscuit ware), dippedin glaze and refired. It was at this point that the fault was foundduring inspection and the ware was stored until the decision to use it wastaken.” Chris and Ray Reynolds, former Decorating Manager for ShelleyPotteries, described the types of faults which led to ware being designated asSeconds thusly: “A piece could be slightly misshapen, i.e., a twist in asaucer or plate, or a cup not fully round, or the handle slightly to one side. There could be a glaze blob on the piece, (where the glaze had not runproperly), a glaze nip, usually on a foot of a cup where a small piece of glazehas stuck, or pinholes in the glaze.” These faults are often covered bythe litho on the finished piece so that a collector may not be able to discoverthe fault. Anything with a crack or chip would have been thrownout. These Seconds ware pieces were sold by Shelley at a deepdiscount. Shelley took great pride in the quality of their wares andwould never have sold ware with hidden faults at full price." Patternnumbers for seconds range in number from 2000 to 2571 and in date from June 1919 toJune 1966. Theearly ones are quite rare and as this one is only58patterns into the range I would definitely classifythisone as early. CONDITION
From a display point of view both pieces look great but have slight damage other than their factory flaws. The jug has discolouration both inside andoutside in the base as shown in photosbut it still 'pings' quite well when tapped. There are no chips, cracks or crazing andits glaze is bright and glossy. I think the flaw which caused it to be ratedas a second is the spout is a bit misshapen.Nothing dramatic but this is the only thingI could see. The side plate has a small chip out of one edge - see close-up photo - it's nothuge but it's there. It has no crazing or cracks and the glazeis bright and glossy. It doesn't 'ping' like a piece without a chip but still does ring a bit. I haven't been able to determine why it wasdeemed a second - looks good to me. DIMENSIONS
The jug measures just under 8 cm high (3 1/8") The side plate is 14 cm across(5 7/16") >>>>>><<<<<< We guarantee our descriptions are accurateand our prices competitive.
