The information about this train came from "Greenburg's Guide To Ives Trains", page 74.
Up for bid is this exceedingly rare Ives 0-4-0 Electric-style NYC S-type No. 30 windup locomotive with three series 500 passenger cars.
This set came from the late Rulon T...aylor's personal collection. Mr. Taylor was well known as a producer of exact copies of a huge variety of Ives parts as well as being active as one of the directors in the National Ives Collectors Organization.
Mr. Taylor restored the locomotive's shell using the Ives forest green enamel color and red for the window frames. The frame and whistle are original. The couplers may be, also. The bell is a Taylor-made reproduction. Gold stampings on the sides.
Ives produced the No. 30 in the early 1920's using the small 8 1/2" cast iron frame and sheet metal body of the No. 3250.
Interestingly, Mr. Taylor chose to change out the non-running Ives clockworks and cleanly installed a Marx windup motor with ringing bell. This conversion works great and the locomotive runs very nicely.
The engine has the winding key and a push/pull motor gear lock as did the original. The spring has enough power to pull the three cars. Beware over winding that will damage the motor.
The 500 series cars are all original circa 1920's and are as follows:
550 Express Service - U.S. Mail Car. Excellent shiny litho. No dents or rust. Some scratches. 551 Chair Car. Excellent shiny litho. No dents or rust. Some scratches. 552 Parlor Car. Very good shiny litho. No rust. Some scratches. One roof tab not placed inside roof edge. Easy fix if desired.
What an unusual Ives set to run on your layout or show off to your friends. You will not likely see another Ives No. 30 windup passenger set, not at a train show nor in someone's collection.
High bidder to pay actual shipping cost as calculated by eBay based on weight of package (approx. 4#) and destination zip code. Thank you.
