This off-white ashtray is said to have been made by Kahiki owner Bill Sapp’s wife, Marcy, circa 1961. She made all the original pottery and vessels in the early days of the supper club down in the basement. As they were not mass produced and only intended for use in the restaurant, none of the pieces were ever offered for sale and have become highly sought after. The ashtray is round and decorated on either side with tiki faces and is stamped with a repeated pattern of round "dots.” It has two indentations for cigarettes and is marked "Kahiki" on the interior. The bottom is felt.
There are hairline cracks at both ends of the ashtray that start under the cigarette indents and work their way down, which you can see in the photos. This does not compromise the integrity of the piece. There are also some brown spots inside the ashtray and a large spot on the exterior that appears to be an old cigarette burn. Please look at all pics carefully and let us know if you have any questions.
