Though you do see bottles from the long gone Savage drug store, this bottle's shape and the embossing pattern is completely different than the others you see, yet even those are anything but commonly seen. Miles City Montana was and is the original old raw western frontier cow town. When you see old pictures of Miles City, you see nothing but cowboys. And Cattle. Everywhere. The movie Lonesome Dove ended in Miles City with the end of the cattle drive from Texas. The Custer battlefield is not far from where Miles City is, cowboys vs. Indians. After the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, where Custer and the 7th Calvary were massacred, the U.S. Army built a fort where the Tongue River flowed into the Yellowstone River, which was in the general vicinity that Miles City now occupies. Even the town is named for General Nelson Miles, a Civil War Veteran turned Indian fighter. And here for sale is an antique bottle from Miles City, a nice sized bottle, and one in which the Savage name that is embossed on this bottle played an important role in early Miles City history. Evidently, Charles Savage was the father of William Savage, whose name (W. E. Savage) is embossed on this bottle. Charles Savage was Miles City's first postmaster and served two years as sheriff. The town of Savage, Montana, NE from Miles City and close to the Dakota border, was named for him. His son William E. was sheriff of Custer County as well as the druggist whom had these bottles produced. He was former vigilance member and actually went on to be quite a successful business man and druggist, as the W. E. Savage bottles testify to, check it out!
