Highly ornate and very rare 9"H x 6" W x 3" D Japanese Tea Ceremony bell hand made of cast bronze weighing just over 2 pounds...dating to the 1800s (19th century) with exact date unknown. This bell would have been used to call invited guest to come in from the stunning garden that most Japanese homes joyfully shared and to partake in the ritual of serving tea together. This particular bell is quite large, elaborate and dimensional, so may have been from a more affluent family / estate......and the design is to both sides of the bell. The handle itself, (which is 1.5" across) is of a Deity with a necklace and some sort of headdress...possibly Buddhist but could be researched further...and towards the bottom of the handle, wonderful scroll work has been added along with studs as shown. The decorative flower like seal to the bell body is a Japanese Mon which is a family crest...so, the bell could be traced if so desired. On the bottom of the bell there are three "feet" for it to be placed on a table or shelf and sits perfectly straight up. SEE ALL IMAGES ( angles may make bell appear leaning, it does not! )The bell has a very nice tone to it and has its original hand made ball inside...no rust etc...I have kept it as found with its deep rich naturally aged patina in place...found this piece at an estate and just amazed by every aspect of design and quality, had to have it not really knowing what it was other than an unusual bell...there was no history with it and what I have shared has been found through much researching...I guarantee this piece to be as shown and described...fully. I know it is a rarity, as the few that have survived all are different one from the other in design, size and of course, the Japanese Mon to each would be personal to the family or clan. For any bell or Japanese collector, this is a true treasure and pleases me to offer to an appreciative home... The bell is in exceptionally nice condition, no damage found throughout, fully in tact...a superb collectible. Has hand rub wear in places expected where it was held and rung to invite the guest and family in from the garden...must have been a strong hand holding and ringing a 2 pound bell!
