Reference Number: Avaluer:30288805 |
British Army tradition has always valued the bayonet above all other arms, especially in close quarters fighting, as it cannot jam or misfire, and presents a far lower threat to one's comrades than the rifle. Every British "Tommy" underwent intensive training to instill "the spirit of the bayonet", as it was believed an aggressive advance on the enemy's position would cause fear, panic, confusion, flight, and surrender. British troops of WW1 were issued the tried and true SMLE Enfi...eld rifle and accompanying P-1907 bayonet for the tough fighting "In Flanders Fields". This British WW1 WILKINSON PALL MALL P-1907 ENFIELD BAYONET is in very good condition, with some slight rounding to the blade tip, some light sharpening and scattered nicking to the blade edge, some scattered scratching and spot patina at each side of the blade, a small ding in the top left edge of the guard, some light nicking to the handle scales, and with some light overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the bayonet is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features a 16 7/8" blade, sports tough dark brown hardwood handle scales, and is stamped at the ricasso with its maker, the famous "WILKINSON / PALL MALL", along with the classic British "King's Crown", the model year, "1907", and the date of manufacture, "3 18" (March 1918). It carries some additional British proof marks at the reverse ricasso, boasts a fully functional "locking lug" attachment at the pommel, and is complete with an original British WW2 P-1907 Scabbard in very good condition, with a spot dent in the right side of the throat, some light loosening to the throat, some scattered patina to the throat and end tip, and with some scattered scratching and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough dark brown/black leather construction. Most interestingly, it bears the traditional metal reinforced throat (with round frog stud) and end tip, and exhibits "M/44" stamped at the front of both those pieces, denoting manufacture by J.B. Brooks & Co. of Birmingham. The set is a fine example of a rare, original British WW1 WILKINSON PALL MALL P-1907 ENFIELD BAYONET.
