This is one I have never seen before and find no reference to it anywhere on the internet. This is a genuine recruitment poster from the attic of a Navy Aviation instructor who served from Korea to shortly after Vietnam.
John Berkey was a Sci-Fi artist who did the movie posters for Star Wars and ...Dune, among others.
I found reference to Berkey working for NASA and the Navy and what is apparently the original painting on Berkey dedicated sites, but no depictions of this US Navy printed and released poster anyplace.
Poster measures 24 x 32.5" and is in excellent condition. Some minor compression damage on the edges from rolled storage that will all matte out when framed. The horizontal "lines" seen in some of the photos are shadow caused by my high light source on the undulations in the poster from being rolled up for many years. Under glass or plexi, these will disappear. It was never displayed and has been in dry storage for approx. 40 years.
I have to believe this is rare and saw very little public exposure, perhaps because it was considered a misrepresentation of Navy technology.
Google and Wikipedia "John Berkey". It's quite amazing. John Lucas purchased Berkey paintings and used them to pitch the idea for "Star Wars" to studios. The Death Star and fighters were conceived and designed by Berkey before the movie was made..
There is a website called ""johnberkeyart" that depicts the image under the catagory "boats and airplanes", but not as a Navy Poster.
Poster will be carefully re-rolled and shipped in a rigid cardboard tube, either First Class or Priority, your choice.
