Here on offer is a stylish antique carveddip pen and letter opener with a Stanhope of Mount Sinai (in the HolyLands), dating to the late 1800s. Stanhopes were also known as Stanho-scopes areoptical devices that allow the viewing of microphotographs without an expensivemicroscope. Invented by Rene Dagron in 1857, he attached a microphotograph atthe end of a Stanhope lens, he called it a bijoux photo-microscopic. Heexhibited at the 1862 London Exhibtion where he received ‘Honoura...ble Mention’and presented them to Queen Victoria. The Stanhope is set into the end of the pen cover. TheStanhope has a view of Mount Sinai with information beneath. The cover has a threaded endto screw it in position over the pen and has a textured end to use as a seal ifdesired. This wonderful carving has a beautifully turnedhandle with some great detail near the top. The section for holding the nib. Thesegment that acts as a letter opener is a flat blade with a very unusual shape.The piece has some typically Indian pierced work motifs. The letter opener has remains of a hand painted word on one side. This wonderful dip pen is offeredin excellent antique condition, it measures about 20.6cm in length and is 1.7cmat the widest point.
