In four short years, the US Army Air Forces grew from a small air service to a mighty armada that swept the Luftwaffe from the skies, and was capable of projecting force on a global scale. AAF pilots of WW2 were issued the classic A-11 leather flight helmet for wear in intermediate weather. This US Army AAF WW2 PILOT A-11 LEATHER FLIGHT HELMET is in good condition, with some brownish paper residue at the upper left ear cup, moderate drying, surface tearing, and surface cracking to ...the front "bill", about half of the chamois hole cover from the interior left ear pad having come unglued, some light seam tearing to the upper inner edge of the interior right ear pad, some scattered darkening to the lining, and with some scattered drying and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the helmet is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough brown capeskin leather construction. Most interestingly, it's a Size Large, bears the classic "winged star" outline decal of the "ARMY AIR FORCES" at the left crown, and carries a "winged star" outline stamping at the right crown of the chamois lining. The helmet boasts 4 darkened brass "male" snaps along each side of the front, with an additional "male" snap at the lower left side, sports black rubber ear cups with chamois "donut" interior ear pads, and features all of the original darkened brass and leather fittings throughout. It exhibits the traditional front "bill", leather chinstrap with darkened brass closure buckle, and "TYPE A-11 / SELBY SHOE CO." AAF nomenclature label inside, and is a fine example of a rare, original US Army AAF WW2 PILOT A-11 LEATHER FLIGHT HELMET. Now celebrating over 20 years on eBay.
