'Sertao Forte' is a selection of Passiflora cincinatta, a wild tropical species from the Caatinga of Brazil. It was developed by the Brazilian Government organization EMBRAPA.
From their website, translated into English:Wild passion fruit cultivar, obtained by a mass selection process of a population of wild accessions of the species Passiflora cincinnata from different origins, mainly aiming at increasing productivity and fruit size. It produces fruits of light green color, whe...n ripe, with weight ranging from 109 to 212 g, of very acidic pulp, suitable for juice making, presenting light yellow to whitish color and brix ranging from 8 to 13 ºBrix. Pulp yield is around 35% when manually extracted with sieve, and 50% when extracted in rotating pulping. Under the conditions of the state of Pernambuco and in the Cerrado of the Central Plateau, it has produced from 18 to 29 t/ha/year in open pollination and, depending on the conditions of crop management, can achieve productivity above 30 t/ha in the first year of production. It presents as a highlight characteristic, greater tolerance to water stress and the long production cycle, when compared to the cultivars of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) available in the market. It has agro-industrial and ornamental potential, constituting an important alternative of exploitation by the family farmers of the Caatinga and the Cerrado, both for the fruit market destined to industrial processing, as well as by adding value to the processed pulp product in the form of juices, jams, sweets and ice creams.
I was sent seeds from Brazil, as this hybrid cultivar is propagated by seed. This is a well-rooted cutting in a four inch pot, from my most vigorous seedling. It hasn't fruited yet, but I imagine it will this summer. It will probably need a second, unrelated vine in order to set fruit. This rooted cutting has been growing in-doors, under lights, and will need to be put in the shade for a few days to adjust to the outside world before putting into full sun. This rooted cutting is over 2 feet long. This variety is very hard to get, and has never been sold in the US before.
