Vintage C1900 " Agents For Lipton ' S Teas " Double Sided Enamel Sign

This superb double sided enamel sign, "Agents For Lipton's Teas" dates from around 1900 and would have been attached outside a grocers shop. Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton was a Glasgow-born entrepreneur who by 1888, had opened 300 Lipton stores, he went onto enter the tea trade and “Liptons” Teas were born. It was Thomas Lipton who was the first to package tea in small, convenient tins rather than loose leaf tea.The sign has the usual enamel losses and nibbles to the edges, there a...re also two small areas of enamel loss to the body on one side and one to the other side, as well as the marks and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age and use. We have tried to show the condition in the photographs. However, the cobalt blue background and stylish white lettering still have a good depth of colour and a fair gloss.The Royal appointment crest is still clear to both sides.The flange is well attached and sturdy.It measures 42 cm (16 1/2 inches) by 33 cm (13 inches). Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton was a Glasgow-born entrepreneur who by 1888, had opened 300 Lipton stores, he went onto enter the tea trade and “Liptons” Teas were born.
