During the American Civil War, where he served as a military observer, he observed the use of balloons for military purposes. This inspired Zeppelin to begin developing his ideas for lighter-than-air flight, to which he devoted himself after resigning from the Army. He hired engineers and settled on a design including a steerable, aluminum frame, light but powerful engines, and multiple separate gas cells with a rigidly attached gondola. He soon used his connections to begin a public funding campaign for his new company, the Gesellschaft zur Forderung der Luftschiffart, into which he also invested his own funds, which amounted to over half the capital. He made his first flight in the airship LZ 1 over Lake Constance near Friedrichshafen on July 2, 1900.He accumulated a number of powerful patrons, including even royalty, as he continued to build his company, producing several more airships. Eventually, many of his company's airships were bought by the German military, which would use them in World War I as scouts and long-range bombers. They would, however, prove very vulnerable to weather and therefore less effective under field conditions and in action than had been hoped.
