A rare very large antiqueRoyal Doulton stoneware match striker/holder with sterling silver band, globular form. This holder / striker is large, it measures almost 5” talland almost 6” across. The match holder area opening is about 2 ½” in diameter. Top/ opening is trimmed with silver collar. Stamped on the bottom withthe Royal Doulton hallmark and 7789 UBW. Hallmarks on the sterlingband are J.G.&S makers mark for John Goode & Sons (or Joseph Gloucester ofBirm...ingham), Birmingham(assay office) anchor, Lion passant, date code “N”. The markings on the bottom date this item between 1922 and1956 and the markings on silver date this to 1937.It is in great antique condition without any physicaldamages such as chips, dings or cracks. The only exception is minor dirt / soilof normal intended use issues, which I have not attempted to clean for the lackof expertise regarding these items. This item’s rough (texture) exterior isperfect for its intended use as a striker, but it also seems to trap dirt.There is some tarnish tosilver band. A great piece for the ceramic, silver and tobacciana collector
