The custom of seamen of all countries to wear sailors' caps on the ribbon is based on the fishermen of the Mediterranean Sea, who in olden times, sailing on their fragile sailing vessels, usually received from mothers, wives, close belts with embroidered words of prayer, spells, cordial reminders. The sailor tied his long hair with a ribbon presented in a superstitious belief that the loving hand of a mother or a bride embroidering a saving prayer would invisibly protect him from all ...disasters on the sea. Sometimes an inscription with the name of a loved one or with words that determined the nature of its owner was painted on the ribbon: Do not touch me, Brave, Sea tramp, etc. In 1872 the ribbons appeared on their caps. Up to this time, on the shortcuts of sailors' caps, as already mentioned above, only cut-out letters and numbers were placed, which were painted over or put in yellow cloth.
