We acquired this hatchet in a LOT from Northern Minnesota -- from an area where the population is oriented to the outdoors. The hatchet, which is labeled as a Marbles #9, appears to have never been sharpened. There are some small marks on the piece, perhaps from moving or from being carried on outdoor trips and not used.
We believe the hatchet has been refinished. The handle most likely has... been sanded down and consequently has a bit less girth than when it was new-- good for a person with small hands. The head shows some pitting underneath the shiny finish, a feature similar to what happens with refinished guns.
We also note that where the head is affixed to the handle there is a bit of empty space in the cutout. This is probably also due to the refinishing. The new owner should watch this for a loosening of the head, a factor that some Marble hatchets have to have corrected (it is not difficult). Also, the impression of Gladstone, Michigan, the place where the ax was made, is roughly impressed. The impression can be read clearly enough to see that the ax was made in the U.S.A.
The use of "Mich." as an abbreviation for Michigan, dates the impression to before 1969, when the US Post Office first began using 2-letter abbreviations.
The length of the hatchet is about 11", and the measure of the ax head is approximately 4.5" from one end to the other.
The blade protector is in good shape. Its design was patented in 1905-6 by the man who founded Marbles.
This ax is in good shape. The refinishing has given the ax new life.
