S.S Janeta was a British steam merchant ship. The ship was completed in 1929 by Barclay, Curle and co, Whiteinch Glasgow. She was attacked and sunk by a German U Boat May 1, 1944 (U-181, Kurt Freiwald) about 900 miles south by west of Ascension Island. The U boat misidentified the ship as Banavon. Ten crew members and four gunners were killed. The master, 30 crew, and four gunners were rescued. On May 12- ten survivors were picked up by USS Alger after being spotted ...by aircraft. Fifteen more survivors were picked up by the Swedish motor merchant Freja The picture is in very good condition. It is like a postcard but I think it was a card to remember the ship. There is no writing or postmark on the back. The width is 6 inches and the length is 4 inches. There is a sailing ship in the background.
