1916 Pictorial Review Magazine ~ January, and Misc Other 1916 Pattern Pages ~
  ~ Descripti...on ~

It is unfortunate that a previous owner removed the pattern pages from several Pictorial Review issues and discarded the rest of the magazine that would have put these fashions in context of it's era.

As it is, however, these pages have been protected fairly well since then and the images and fabric suggestions and construction details are all preserved.

This large format magazine measures 16" x 11" and has 14 two-sided pages. Eight of these pages are from January 1916, with the others being dated to 1916 based on the pattern number sequences featured.
~ History ~Pictorial Review (New York) published their monthly magazines for five decades from September 1899 to 1939.  With just $13 in capital, William Paul Ahnelt, a German immigrant, founded "Pictorial Review" to advertise his "American Fashion Company" line of home sewing patterns. The magazine logo has the number "13" in it to reflect the company's humble beginnings.
By the late 1920's it was one of the largest women's fashion magazines, and by June, 1931, boasted an impressive circulation of 2, 540, 000 and even hosted a radio program.  The magazine was sold to its Vice President in 1936 and merged with "The Delineator" (Butterick) in 1937. Publication continued for only two more years, finally succumbing to the fate of many other magazines during the Great Depression.
PictorialReview (along with Excella and Elite Styles) is my favorite pattern line. Few of the competing pattern companies could match Pictorial Review's detailed renderings of their patterns.  While other pattern companies provided only simple line drawings or even vague outlines, Pictorial Review artists captured the 3D feel of the fabric and how it would look on a model in near photographic duplication, especially in the early years. ~ Condition ~  Good condition. This auction is for PAGES ONLY from the fashion and pattern sections of some of the Pictorial Review magazines in 1916. The pages with clean and bright with no markings or cut-outs. There is minimal fraying along a few of the edges.  One page has a pencil note of "Jan 1916."This item is a vintage product, used, with appropriate wear and tear, sold "As Is."  Please consult photos to determine condition or please feel free to ask questions.
