DESCRIPTIONPlace oforigin: Spitalfields, London - England (made, designed)Date: c.1800-20sArtist/Maker:Unknown (production)Materialsand Techniques: Brocaded silk Provenance:Important European Private Collection, Paris (France) A rare Georgian, circa 1800-20s, Spitalfields Silk fragment orpanel featuring a stunning and scarce pattern and background in light golden yellow and polychrome flowers, baskets and ribbons, removedfrom a “robe a l´Anglaise, comprising two sections or panels that makes a good piece of period textile.This panel was acquired from the same important Parisian Textile Collectionwhere we found and got a good number of other Spitalfields silks available atour store and studios. According to the collector, the textile was mostprobably cut from the original gown rather than being unused due to the factthat shows normal wear and fading, which adds tons of charm to the piece!, and thishas arrived to our hands in such great “faded grandeur” condition as itsoriginal owner left it in the early 19th century. Elegant fabrics like this exhibited wealth and taste in this period, andtextiles and clothing were a form of investment that could be sold readily forcash if necessary or gifted to the church for reuse. This beautiful and regaltextile was definitely a significant investment.I´velovingly called this panel “LA COUVERTURE”because of its wrapping shape and good length, and also because it is a soft, mediumweight silk textile with an opulent and stylishpattern softly brocaded that, apart from being a very tasteful choice for themost exquisite gown, one can imagine it as a wrap shawl covering theshoulders of a lady over an ethereal Empire muslin gown as well.The brocade or pattern is subtly woven / incrusted in fine silk floss ina wonderful variety of pastel colors on a rich and very smooth ground with gives the fabric a very pleasant texture. The ground is a nice rare light gold ochre yellow color, shiny andvery soft, that changes depending on the light and angle, fully covered oflarge scaled flowers, baskets of flowers, ribbons and scrolls in shades oflight ochre or off white or silver, Prussian Blue, mustard yellow and froggreen. The subtle background pattern adds dimension, and a bit of sheen underthe candle light.The panel consists of two pieces of silk cloth, interwoven only wherethe pattern appears and matches better. This is undoubtedly the work of askilled seamstress or needlewoman, or even, a nun.The panelis asymmetrically cut to one end. The finish and surface is a little opened, that´s the weft, due to age and craftmanship, but it is super beautiful andunusual if you are not looking for perfection But for beauty, rarity and a periodtextile superb for a variety of reasons and purposes.
Antique condition sold as is for referencepurposes or projects/ re working. This is a stunning find for archive, study, display, enjoy and even reuse. It is truly a rare and wonderful piece of earlytextile art. It needs to be carefully preserved by storing flat and away fromsunlight, insects and humidity. CONDITION: The panel has survived in Good to Very Good Condition keepingin mind it is 200 years old. The silk is still wonderfully strong and clean. Normaluse, no stains, no rust. No fraying but delicacy, just one or two slight fraysor rips where threads are visible and some even unbroken, asymmetrical cut inone end, wear to fabric along edges. The textile may be stabilized to avoid futuredamages, although the fabric and fibers are strong in general. Colors are goodbut one can see their slight natural fading due to the passage of time.
