RARE MID - 19TH C ANTIQUE AMBROTYPE US CIVIL WAR UNION SOLDIER, FULL UNIFORM/RIFLE
Item History & Price
DESCRIPTI...ON:Found in southern New Hampshire. It's in splendid, pristine and nearly immaculate, originally constituted condition. It's without the hinged, pressed leather portfolio case it would have been kept in. Estate fresh and new to the marketplace. An image that has never before been seen by a soul outside of the home where it had always been. A veritable image of a ghost, now 160 years old. Most likely a former enlisted US serviceman in the Union Army and part of one of the New Hampshire infantry regiments. The young soldier has an especially youthful, innocent face and is seen standing for this portrait dressed in a Union Army wool and center buttoned long coat, with unsnapped kepi cap and Union Army issued muzzle loader long rifle with fixed bayonet. Realized sometime between 1861-1865, this was a portrait taken of this young man, most likely to be kept by his mother and father to remember their son by, when he was at war with the renegade Confederate Army of the South and a final photographic reminder of him, should he be killed in action and never heard from again. The soldier's cheeks were hand-colored with pinkish blush to give the black and white photograph a more lifelike appearance. The solemnity of the occasion and of the moment was not lost upon many Americans and certainly not this quite young man, ready to throw his body and youthful aspirations into the teeth of war and brutal combat, with his fate and the fate of the entire nation hanging in the balance. This was only very carefully opened for inspection at one corner to see if there was any paper with possibly an inscription on it of who this Civil War Union soldier possibly was or the regiment he fought with but there was not. There is no evidence of who he was or his ultimate fate, whether he survived the war or was killed. The photographic emulsion of the ambrotype photograph back plate, that's a slightly iridescent sepia brown film on the back of the glass plate, is nearly undisturbed. The glass of the ambrotype photograph is also unbroken and the gold tin foil 2-part surrounding frame is also well-preserved. The piece is in absolutely 100% original antique condition and is untouched and undisturbed, with no additions or subtractions. It features incredible photographic resolution and image clarity. Near museum quality. A simply unbelievable US Civil War military ambrotype photograph in simply unbelievable condition. Magnificent. Offered without apologies. It needs none. CONDITION:Very Good to Excellent overall antique condition.
