RARE PING 1966 SCOTTSDALE ANSER PUTTER VERSION 2 KARSTEN (NEWPORT BEACHED)

Up for auction is an excellent specimen of the Karsten/Ping Scottsdale Anser -- Version 2 (Cavity engraving/stamping more centered) with a "Flat" sole. The version 2 is the only one of the 8 Versions of the Scottsdale Anser that has the "Flat" Sole available, as all other versions are the "Rocker" Sole' The "Flat" sole is not seen again until the introduction of the Karsten Dalehead in 1968.
This Scottsdale Anser Version 2 is also 35.5" in l...ength with an 8.5" First Step True Temper shaft and has been regripped with a new Golf Pride Pro Only Pistol/Paddle grip. Putter head has a very nice patina and has minimal to no bag chatter marks. It has the 'Flat Sole'. There are the usual casting imperfections as these putters were 'wet sand' casted back in the "60's and minor 'pits' were a normal occurrence. Letter in cavity is not as clear as is with the accompanying Version 1, but is readable. I 'chalked it' so it would stand out more in the pictures. Lettering on the the Heel and Toe are clean and very readable. Patent numbers and letter can be made out, but is somewhat difficult. A casualty of the manufacturing process. Tried to capture this in the pictures. Cavity engraving stamping reads and is not as skewed so that the 'IN' in PING is just in the Cavity's arch:

Overall there were about 4000 Scottdale Ansers made in the 1966-67 time frame with Versions 1 & 2 (Rocker and Flat Sole) making up the greater portion of the 4000 of the 8 Versions. The lowest production numbers are associated with Versions 4 through 8 with Versions 6, Version 7 (Gary Player signature on Sole with Version Pat numbers 202, 715 & 203, 512 in the Cavity) and Version 8 (Gary Player signature on Sole with Version Pat numbers 3, 042, 405 & 196, 734 in the Cavity) being the rarest. There were about 300 of the Gary Player Versions made with less than a handful being Version 8. Version 6 is almost as rare, with as few as 10 having been reported.
