This is the TwelveTreesPress printing from 1986. It's a first edition, limited to 5000copies, clothbound hardcover, and increasingly hard to find. The intro isby Roland Barthes, translated (years before we met) by my friend Angus Whyte. This has page after page of beautifully rendered black and white andhand-colored images on heavy stock, quality suitable for individualframing. The "afterword" by Jack Woody contains a brief bio ofvon Gloeden's serendipitous ...arrival at photography, his shared models withcousin von Pluschow, the censorship and destruction of his work by the churchand Italy'sfascists, and the discovery of prints starting in the 1960s. Most of theimages in this book were being seen for the first time in 80 years when it wasprinted. An excellent collation of his work. I'm listing thecondition as "good" because although the pages are in excellentshape, this copy is not perfect. The wrapper is intact, the back cover isa bit warped indicating humidity exposure . The dustjacket is encased ina clear plastic bookjacket wrap. Although it is complete and intact, it appearssomewhat worn by its earlier owner, with a bit of rear warping and humiditydamage to the back cover and some very minor waffling to the last eight or tenpages, generally just at the top edge of the margins. There's no indication ofwater stain. The reproductions of Von Gloeden's nudes are as stunning as theday they were printed, and they are not marred by any of the slightimperfections this volume contains.
