Every so often, a real rarity becomes available, and this is one of those times. Philodendron bicolor is a climbing species from Peru that has not been found extensively in the wild and is still extremely rare in cultivation. This Philodendron was discovered relatively recently in the Peruvian Amazon and was brought into the US for the first (and perhaps only) time just a few years ago. P. bicolor is still exceedingly rare in cultivation - most botanical gardens don't ev...en have this plant in their collections! The velvety green upper surface of the leaf contrasts beautifully with the rich red lower surface, and the two different colors inspired the species name. To me, one fascinating feature of this Philodendron is the sharp boundary betwen green and red, which can be seen on the side of the petiole. Those plants are nice, but they are not P. bicolor.Philodendron bicolor is known only from the area near Loreto, Peru, at elevations of around 650 feet. It prefers intermediate to warm, humid conditions, although it can tolerate temperatures into the 50s at night during the winter. For me, this species grows well in a potting mix that holds moisture but also provides good drainage. I grow mine in a greenhouse under 50% shade with excellent results.

That small plant sold for more than $200! The first three photos show my stock plant, with its beautiful leaves and striking coloration.
