The rice paper is very old but all of the interior pages are in good condition. The outer "cover" is dry but still very much intact. They came from an estate that moved from Mainland Asia to Hawaii to Tennessee (probably memorabilia from grandparents and great grandparents) with WW1 c. Pre1914 books and photos WW11 military books. All of those I kept. These are not just a "dictionary" they are packed full of cool stories of the dynasties from early China. All I know is what I was told ...about the books when I aquired them. TheKangxi Dictionary(Chinese:;pinyin:Kngx Zdin) was the standardChinese dictionaryduring the 18th and 19th centuries. TheKangxi Emperorof the ManchuQing Dynastyordered its compilation in 1710. It used the earlierZihuisystem of 214 radicals, today known as214 Kangxi radicals, and was published in 1716. The dictionary is named after the Emperor'sera name.This book was compiled by Zhang Yushu, Chen Tingjing, and other famous philologists and linguists from all over China in response to an edict from Emperor Shengzu in the 49th year of the Kangxi era. The work was completed in the 55th year of the Kangxi era. Through diplomats, missionaries, and the 1904 Saint Louis World Exposition, the Library of Congress acquired editions of the Kangxi Dictionary published in 1716, 1780, 1827, and 1878.
