"There's so much interesting legend and myth surrounding this graceful bird. In the myth, I found it fascinating that the swallow migrates to the moon. Perhaps this is how the American Indian legend that its distinctively forked tail is a result of fetching fire from the heavens and accidentally setting its tail on fire came about. In China, these birds are seen as a symbol of good fortu...ne. In Africa, it's said to represent all that's pure and good. I designed this bird with textured, opalescent enamel to capture the light of the moon and heavens, and pav d his tail and back with London blue topaz to represent its thoughtful nature. He carries a pink tourmaline flower in his beak to repel negativity and draw love."—Barbara Bixby
