The company also manufactures clocks and movements for other watch brands. Vostok is a company founded in 1942 when a production unit of the first Moscow watch factory was relocated to Chistopol, a small town near the Kama River in Tatarstan1. In times of war, only military equipment was produced. But after the war was over, the company began to produce watches. However, the "Vostok" brand was not used until 1963. The name "Vostok" probably comes from the Vostok space program, which marked the beginnings of the space race. Other watch companies get their name from Soviet space programs - Poljot and Raketa. HISTORYThe company was appointed as the official supplier of watches to the Defense Department of the Soviet Union in 1965. This year also marked the creation of the famous Komandirskie ("Commander") watch. Behind this name, we find, as in the majority of Vostok products, the very familiar 2416B automatic. These diving watches are equipped with stainless steel or polyurethane bracelets. An updated version of the "Komandirskie" was released in the summer of 2007, while a special anniversary edition of the "Amphibian", called "1967" appeared in early 2008. These two models have in common their high quality finish. Despite the introduction of the new Komandirskie and Amphibia collections, the more classic models (mostly imagined in the 1960s and 1970s) of these collections were still in production (as of 2009). ANECDOTESThe company also manufactures a mechanical clock for submarines, very precise and operating in a wide range of temperatures.
