Stunning antique folk art Spanish Colonial Cuz de Animas, the Cross Of The Souls. Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial inspired, ca. Mid 19th Century with a faint date of 1849. A colorful, free-standing wood carving representing "La Cruz de las Animas" or "The Cross of Souls", this religious artwork is layered with symbolic and allegorical imagery. At the center is Christ on the cross, flanked by the s...un (right) and moon (left). Followed below by two saints, one of which is St. Michael the archangel. Along the bottom are animas solas (meaning lonesome departed ancestral souls). All are hoping for salvation while awaiting judgement amidst the flames of purgatory. Beneath the Crucifixion is an image of Adam and Eve bearing apples with the serpent winding around the trunk, followed by a balance to weigh and judge the souls below and a depiction of the death of St. Bernadette. A wonderful example of religious art representing a subject that was a popular cult of devotion throughout Mexico during the 19th century. All original patina, crackled and burned in some spots. It wobbles a bit at base but is solid. The painted figures are crisp clear and gruesome. It stands 19.75” tall by 9” wide by 3” deep. See photos for all detail.
