Joined the Luftwaffe in 1936, In 1939, prior to the invasion of Poland he joined the newly formed 3./JG 21, which was redesignated on 6th June 1940 into 9./JG 54. It was flying the Me109 fighter.During the Battle of France on 10th May 1940, he shot down a Gloster Gladiator over Tongeren in Belgium. ...That August, he was promoted to the rank of Oberleutnant. On 10th October 1940, he was promoted to Staffelkapitan of 7./JG 54 for a short time; he was leter made Staffelkapitän of 9./JG 54.During the Battle of Britain 9./JG 54 was activated as a Jabo unit, targeting shipping. By November 1940, he had scored 19 air victories, and was awarded the Knights Cross on 7th March 1941.Sent to the Eastern Front his air victories rose steadily to 50 by September 1942. His Group later was posted back to the West for a short period, where in April 1943, he rammed a B-17 Flying Fortress. Returning to the Eastern Front as Kommander of IV./JG3, he ended the war as Adjutant of Adolf Gallands JV44 in the West flying the new Me262 jet. In his 700 missions he scored 60 victories.
He passed away in August 2013.
