Old Antique The Salvation Army Ladies Straw And Silk " Hallelujah " Bonnet
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:3145676 |
Offered is this very old Salvation Army ladies bonnet. It is straw with blue silk trim and a red silk banner across the brim. I believe it is antique, possibly 19th century or early 20th century. If I place the tape measure around the area where the inside joins to the brim, it measures about 19" around.
The 'Hallelujah bonnet' was an important symbol for the Salvation Army. Catherine Booth, wife of the Army's founder, developed the bonnet in 1880 with an Army cade...t, the milliner Annie Lockwood. Mrs Booth chose a bonnet that would be "cheap, strong and large enough to protect the heads of the wearers from cold as well as from brick-bats and other missiles". She trimmed a bonnet chosen from straw designs supplied by local companies – initially the ribbon chosen was blue, but later this would become black. The straw and silk bonnets were first worn in public on 16 June 1880 in a march from Hackney to Whitechapel. The blue silk on the brim of this bonnet is worn at the folds/high spots. No other major holes, tears or damage. The bonnet has general old storage dust and soiling. There is a long grosgrain ribbon on one side only. The bonnet appears to be completely hand stitched. It has a label inside identifying the owner as M. E. Woodward.
