She never stoppeddreaming of the house she would one day own, filled with the saved relics ofher past. It is sad that the storagefees she paid would have been a sizeable down payment on that dream cottage, but she could not ever bring herself to stop dreaming and empty the storagespace, nor could she commit to purchasing a home. At age 94, she died withoutever realizing her dream. Among the stored treasures was ablanket chest filled with new hand-loomed rag rugs. They were almost assuredly woven locally, ifnot by my grandmother herself. Theyremain as pristine as the day they were cut off the loom, thanks to theoverwhelming moth ball scent that protected them for all of those decades! High quality, beautifully worked, and inbrand new condition, these are both vintage-verging-on-antique AND mint. When you find a perfect spot for laying outone of her carefully preserved rugs, say a blessing over Aunt Kay, and thenenjoy!DESCRIPTION:This lovely, thick and durablewool hand-loomed rag rug is perfect for a farmhouse, rustic cabin, cottage orlodge as well as other eclectic decorating themes. It features three different wool fabrics. The center rectangular panelfeatures a tightly woven brown wool with a slightly olive greenish tone, possibly cut from a blanket. On each side of this are 1” verydark navy blue stripes made of fairly tightly woven wool. This is followed by a 1 ½” Kellygreen stripe of a knit fabric, somewhat fuzzy, probably a sweater.Another navy blue stripe and afinal Kelly green stripe on the ends complete the pattern. Black warp threads on the outersides create a 2” wide stripe that highlights the fabric colors. Next to this is a 2” stripe using the whitewarp threads which stand out creating the appearance of a white stripe. The entire center section alternates blackand red threads with the red giving a pop of bright accent color to the wholecenter section. PLEASE NOTE: the colors you see in the photos are notcompletely accurate, despite my best attempts to capture them. Dozens of photos in different light andsettings have failed to bring good results. Please read my colordescription. The main fabric is brown, not gray or orange or red, but does have a muted grayish olive greenish cast. The center section does have red accent threads but it is not a bright redover-all appearance. The red is moresubtle, and the brown mutes the effect, but the camera keeps picking up the redand accentuating it. There is no orangein this rug. The green is a bright Kellygreen, not a dull green. (Apologies forthe inexactness! It is the best I canprovide). The red, black and white fringeis 3 ½’ long tied into 8-strand tassels. The rug is free of mold, mildew, and moth ball odor. There are no holesor stains. An old vintage masterpiece insearch of a good home after over 60 years in storage, it will adapt to manydecorating styles and should wear well for many years.
