Item History & Price
Bazin & Roussel History: In the 1800s, Philadelphia served as a hub for manufactur...ers ofperfumes, soaps and ointments. Edwin T. Feedley wrote in "Philadelphia andIts Manufacturers" that the city's perfumers were "unrivaled"and "the greatest in the world". Eugene Roussel was a majormanufacturer of perfumes and later sodas. Xavier Bazin was first director of theRoussel laboratory from 1840 to 1849, when he became the owner of the company. Eugene Roussel arrived in Philadelphia in1838. He immediately set up aperfumery where he made soaps and luxury toiletries, as well as a fountain ofmineral water. Bazin bought the perfumery business from Roussel when he wanted to focus onhis mineral water business. Bazin continued to use the Roussel name until 1853. The Bazin family ownedthe company until 1884. In 1857, Bazin changed his address to 17 S. 5th street. There he continued to have great success with his perfume shops, especially hisshaving creams. These Bazin products were placed in richly decorated pots, whose lidsare very valuable to collectors. This particular type of pot was used around the period that Bazin was located at 166 Chesnut St, PHILADELPHIA. Since WW1, these pots have become obsolete as they have been replaced by more modern andeconomical packaging. After Roussel sold his business to Bazin, he became animportant figure in the bottling industry. Between 1840 and 1844, bottlersexploded, largely because of the craze for bottled soda and Eugene Rousselmineral waters; in 1838 or 1839, Roussel bottled the first water of bakingsoda, with a lemony taste. He innovated in the taste and quality of bottledwater using his training in a Parisian perfumery and laboratory to invent tastyrecipes, without any of the medicinal or sweet qualities of soda water of thetime. The craze he created was so great that the public demand in bottlestriggered the reopening of the closed factories of Dyottville in 1842. Rousselwas said to be the first to flavor its waters with fruit juices or the first tobottle soda water.Condition: For condition reportplease see "Item specifics/Seller notes" above and check out all thepics as they form an important part of the overall description.FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESEDELIGHTFUL LITTLE LIDDED JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TOMARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM.
