Here we have a large deep aqua blown in dip mold/outwardrolled lip open pontil bottle with a glass seal on the shoulder marked “Fau& Hoffman/Prunes D’Ente/Bordeaux”. Bottle is 10-3/4” tall and 5-3/8” in diameter and is in excellentcondition with a few scratches and heavy base wear but no chips, cracks, stain, or other damage. J. Fau started selling prunes around 1837 and sold themthrough the early 1900’s. I’ve seen acouple of his jars over the years th...ough they appear quite scarce. Betty Zumwalt lists two versions of hisbottles in her book. On the other hand, I’ve only ever seen one other examplemarked Fau & Hoffman and I can’t figure out when Hoffman was in businesswith Fau. It had to be earlier than the1870’s as advertisements later than that do not include any mention ofHoffman. Though it is pure speculation, it is possible Hoffman was brought in for a short time to help sellinternationally and could have been I.C. Hoffman of London, England, whose earlypreserve crocks are found worldwide, especially in the former English colonies. This was recently found in New Hampshire and is just abeautiful piece of early glass. I pretty partial to this but just don't have the space for it.
