On offer is this antique, ORIGINAL (early example, dating to ca 1870) rated as RARE, PRATTWARE Bears Grease "pot lid." We know this is an early example because Mortimer's reference book states that, "The bushes to the left of the guy shooting the gun, and the bushes to the right of the guy loading the gun, are included in this pictorial. The later examples EXCLUDE these two sets of bushes.

The idea being, that the densefur of the bear would somehow be translated to stimulate hair growth in humans, when the grease was applied to the human cranium!!! Back in the day, the grease was scraped off the fatty parts ofthe bear skin & carcass and mixed with various perfumes to make it moreappealing. It was then marketed in these small lidded pots (and usedextensively) as a men’s cosmetic. FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESEDELIGHTFUL LITTLE LIDDED JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TOMARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM.
