c.1924 "quart" Hoffmann Beverage Co. soda water bottle from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 11 1/2 inches tall. Colorless. Machine-made "PRIOF" crown top bottle. Proprietary mold bottle, NOT a plate mold bottle. This bottle has a PRIOF lip. Starting in 1923 the PRIOF lip was advertised by the Illinois Glass Co. as a way to encourage soda water sales. The PRIOF ledge could be used to "pry off" the bottle cap using a coin, key, knife blade, etc. The lip was lettered REGISTER...ED on one side and PATENTED "PRIOF" on the other side. Bottles with PRIOF finishes were furnished at no additional cost to bottlers. Although quite a number of bottlers tried it, the popularity of the PRIOF finish faded by 1930.The bottle is embossed reading vertically down PROPERTY OF / Hoffmann Beverage Co. / CONTENTS / 1 PT. 8 FL.OZ. / MILWAUKEE, WIS. on the front of the bottle. Embossed I (in a diamond) / 1 on the bottom. Embossed small 1399 on the back heel. Bottle is not dated but was blown about 1924 by the Illinois Glass Co. of Alton, Illinois.Good condition. Clean inside and out - no cloudiness. Light casewear. There is chipped area on the REGISTERED side of the "PRIOF" ledge - see last photo. This probably represents damage from when the "PRIOF" ledge was actually used to pry off a bottle cap. No other chips, cracks or bruises. When purchasing 2 or more items, please wait for combined shipping invoice. Even if you end up paying separate shipping for two or more items, I will combine the shipment, and refund your postage overpayment.
