Antique Holy Oil Stock Our Lady of Lourdes silver alloy 1 1/8"h x 3/4" diameter.
This little oil stock would have been used to hold holy oil for anointing the sick and during last rites for the dying, and was possibly part of a traveling kit that a priest would take with him,
No date or manufacturer marks. Appears to be plated silver or a silver alloy, with a slight red under-tinge. I have cleaned it in very gentle baking soda bath to remove any oxidizing without dam...aging the surface
Hinged lid with lid in good shape and fitting well. The inside of the stock is rough and has what I am assuming is the remains of holy oil. Very slight oxidizing on the interior of the hinge. Could be cleaned up more with professional help.
The most attractive element in this little piece is the finely worked lid. Up close, it reveals itself to be be an image Our Lady of Lourdes, with the words "Je suis l'Immaculée Conception" in the mandorla around the Virgin - the famous words spoken to St Bernadette Soubirous in the apparition at Lourdes on March 25, 1858. Also in the mandorla is a cross and the word Lyon, probably the place of manufacture.
Artistically the image is interesting: Mary is vested in the way that Bernadette described her with rosary at her belt and in an attitude of prayer. Either side of here are a rose and a lily - traditional symbols long associated with the Virgin Mary. She is placed in a mandorla, the ancient symbol called vescina piscis, symbolizing the divine realm. The mandorla is an octagon, with an interlaced circle and diamond - the circle being the symbol of perfection and eternity, and the four pointed diamond representing the four gospels.
The outside of this stock is decorated with fleur de lis, stylized lilies long associated with French royalty and saints, especially the Virgin Mary.
Selling this on as I am downsizing.
Would love this to find a new home with someone who will appreciate and treasure it.

With a magnifying glass or scrolling in, right under Mary's right foot seems to be a silvermaker's mark - an inlaid capital A. Other small marks there might also be hallmarks. On the bottom left section of the edge of the mandorla is a cross and underneath that what look like two initials - possibly the silversmith. Magnification also shows up the rose at Mary's feet, which St Bernadette mentioned in her description of the apparition.
