Stone composite panel, 22.5 cm width (9 inches) x 16.5 cm height (6.5 inches), 15 mm thickness (half inch) with inset back-hanger & description label. Berlin Natural History Museum cast of "Pterodactylus Antiqus" fossil skeleton from Late Jurassic limestone at Solnhofen in Germany.
Discovered by Cosimo Callini in 1784 while investigating preserved specimens from Bavarian lithographic limestone strata, the original fossil was destroyed during 2nd World War and the museum mold is all that survives. This is a cast of the first Pterodactyl ever recovered and named. Its given Latin name Pterodactylus means 'Finger Wing.' It was found to have a soft chicken-like crest down the back of its head, webbed feet and the fossil showed its body was covered with a hair-like fur.
