This auction is for a stunning example of a highly pyritised* ammonite fossil of the species Oxynoticeras lymense from the world-famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK.The fossil measures 67 mm (2.62 inches) across, which is a good size for this species. The ammonite is well preserved on both sides in a pyrite matrix. The shell has nice detail in the suture lines and the metallic colour and shine is beautiful. There are also some bivalve shell...s preserved on top of the main ammonite. A great example of the species. Incredible in the flesh. These ammonites are becoming much harder to find these days due to lack of erosion of the right layers of rock. The fossil weighs 68 grams.Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.*Pyrite is a form of iron which sometimes occurs as a replacement mineral during the fossilisation process, depending on conditions in the sediment at the time in which the process takes place as well as the composition of the creature being preserved. It has the appearance of gold which is why it is commonly known as 'fool's gold'. Pyrite ammonites only occur in very specific and limited locations around the world and ones from Charmouth are just about the most famous of the lot.
