Lovely Early Non Tourist Coolamon Hand Carved Australian Aboriginal Bowl

Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:31843
Original Description:
These beautifully hand carved wooden vessels are generally known as Coolamons today and were wonderfully versatile, serving many and varied purposes. Foraging for grains or harvesting crops, they even floated upon the water while tubers were gathered from ponds. Water carrying, even used as a crib for a newborn! This example is likely NOT produced as tourist offering as such pieces were usually further decorated with surface painting, incision carving or pokerwork. I quite prefer these... plain examples which have an integrity and sense of purpose as well as being wonderfully bespoke and individual. This example measures 47.5cm. An age related drying split along the grain to one end is but a small detraction and is appropriate age related wear only.Weight for packing is 750 Grams. Please use the pictures provided as they convey far more effectively what I can only begin to describe about the quality and condition of this item. Any Features or faults will be shown in the close up pics provided. Just one of dozens of significant Australian Aboriginal artefacts we have listed currently. Please be sure to assess the other lots which include Boomerangs, Shields Coolomons, Woomeras, Clubs, Poker worked Snakes, Lizards and other objects besides. We happily combine postage for multiple lots so don’t miss this opportunity from a large private collection, now broken up and sold for the first time in decades. We have listed several other pieces including jewellery, silver, decorative art and collectables. Please refer to our other listings, we’re always pleased to combine postage costs to save you money.
