When General Motors decided to resurrect the GTO for 2004, the aging muscle head crowd had tears in their eyes and anxiously awaited a fabulous, high-tech retro-mobile that would give the look of the great classic Pontiac line and yet would be crammed with all the performance goodies available in the new millennium. Well, GM decided to ...take an opposite route by taking the Australian Holden platform and dump a big push-rod V8 into it in a package that can be best described as a steroidal tuner. There's no doubt that this is a serious, high performance automobile, but its styling bears nothing to suggest its purported lineage. The 2005 model has the LS2 6 liter V8 that puts out 400bhp @6500RPM hooked to a 6-spd manual trans that this model replicates, or the 4spd Hydra-Matic. Performance and styling are all here in an impressive package even if the looks don't have you singing along with Ronnie and the Daytona's.GMP has crafted a beautiful 1/18 scale model of this reinvented muscle car and my example is finished in a subdued clearcoated silver with black interior. The shape is basic wind tunnel with power bulges and twin functional hood scoops. the body sits on 17" 5-spoke wheels shod with low profile radials with directional treads. The spokes are thin enough to reveal red calipers with the fronts bearing the GTO lettering. All the grill mesh is photo etched metal perfectly adapted to even compound curves. More impressive are the beautiful front and rear light groups that are astounding pieces of miniaturization. The model sports full glazing realistically tinted and the yellow defroster grids are perfect in line and relative opacity. The hood opens on arc hinges which support the telescoping prop rods and the engine compartment is another GMP success rife with detail with realistic textures and finishes. From underneath, the mixed medium of plastic and real metal make a convincing replication of the undercarriage, drivetrain and suspension which is operational, but has very little throw on the front end. The 3" dual exhaust system is nicely done in various metallic tones ending in chromed tips that are perfectly centered in their fascia reveals.GMP has done the interior of this car proud, replicating all the features touted including the stainless steel sill plates, drilled metallic race style pedals, the feel and look of soft leather seating steering wheel cover and sifter knob. The gauge cluster is replicated in the flourescent red and green of the HUD format so popular these days and the surround appears to be etched metal. Other than the articulated front seats, there are no working parts, but the cockpit of this coupe is so busy, I couldn't get my fingers in there to flip a visor or open a glove box. This is a well crafted model of a car that could launch a new generation of muscle cars carrying the GTO marque.... or could just as easily become a mere footnote in automotive minutiae. Time and sales will tell. Nothing to fault this model at its price point. 5 stars.
