This a wonderful, detailed Black Forest carving of the dog carrying a spirit barrel around his neck. These dogs were famously used in the Swiss mountains to assist in the rescue of stranded travelers and skiers.The dog is standing on all fours on a carved base that resembles a mountainous trail, complete with stones and grass. He has a solemn, intelligent look, as befits the working breed. The carving is in enough detail to discern the dog’s fur and toenails.There is even detail in t...he carving of the barrel which hangs from a collar that the sculptor made to look like leather. There are also leather-looking straps wrapped around his mid-section, perhaps to help in a rescue by pulling someone out of deep snow.Dating to around 1900, this St. Bernard carving is in excellent condition, with no issues to report. It has acquired a beautiful deep, rich brown color and lustrous patina. It is a fine example to add to one’s collection.It measures 5-1/4 inches from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail and 3-3/4 inches tall.
