The item offered for sale is aunique Pre-Columbian Idol Figure Olmec Head with Snake god coiled (possibly a rattle snake) to the rear of the head 12th-9th BC + or -.It has lovely facial features with oval egg shaped head and coiled serpent god on the rear of the head.Comes with a perspex display stand so can be displayed as a head or a coiled snake. Carved from extremely heavy stone.Measures 54.45 mm high, 41.90 wide and 50.16 mm deep.Weighs 181.9 grams (6....41 oz) approx. Nice example.It has characteristic mouth, slitted eyes, and oversized head that appears to show cranial deformation but rather reveals the custom of head shaping. It has filleted hair and coiled snake, the forehead could possibly have originally had a gold attachment.Provenance: Ex London collection gathered in the 1970's. In fine condition, no repair or restoration.
