Mporro Marriage Necklace. Samburu Kenya. Pre-owned Vintage. This is a very old Married Woman’s Necklace from Africa. This is not a tourist piece. This is pre-owned and in very good shape based on age, prior wear. Any imperfections or irregularities are natural to the creation of this piece.The necklace is made from elephant hair, red Mporro beads, handmade red ochred cloth, and whatever other organic materials were needed to bind this together. It is a fragile piece.Seller purchased this necklace, as is, in Berkeley, CA, in 1987, from D and B Wezelman, buyers/sellers of ethnic artifacts in India, South America, and Africa. As referenced in this article, newer marriage necklaces are made from Doum palm nut fibers or other materials, due to fewer living elephants.Necklace weighs 7.7 oz. It is 12 1/4” length. 11 1/4” width. The depth of the elephant hair, beads at the base is 2 3/4”.Shipped with USPS Priority Mail, large flat rate box because that is what fits securely without crushing.
