WW1 Original German Spiked Helmet PRUSSIAN KÜRASSIER COCKADE. (Kokarde) It is bigger than the normal cockade. It is 2 1/2" round. The Pickelhaube was designed by Friedrich Wilhelm IV andadopted by the Prussia Army in 1842. It was first worn on active duty in 1849, during the suppression of an uprising in the south-west German state of Baden. The helmet was modified several times, mostly as a result of field experiencegarnered during the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. By ...1886, thePickelhaube was the standard form of headdress adopted by the German army.Although dominated by Prussia, the separate German states maintained theiridentity through their distinctive helmet plates and the cockades worn on eitherside. The "Land-Kokarde" indicated the state that the bearer wasattached to, and was normally worn on the left side of the Pickelhaube, fittedunto the side post of the chin strap. Given the dominance of Prussia, itscockade was worn, on the right, with that of some eighteen German states, on theleft, until 1897, when the "Reichs-Kokarde" was introduced. The"Reichs-Kokarde" was a national, unifying symbol and was to be worn, by all ranks, on the right side post of the Pickelhaube by all states. Itcontinued to be worn until 1918.I bought it from a WWI veterans estate over 40 years. Guaranteed original
