Engraved First Wedding Anniversary - From Wilson In Australia
An Abs...olutely Fantastic Solid Brass Trench Art RAAF Spitfire w/Spinning Propeller Flying Over The Australian States & Territories, Gifted By RAAF AceSergeant Rex Kerslake Wilson, in 1940.
This was acquired from the estate of a former WWII RAF Pilot who later moved to the US. I spoke with his daughter and was told that her father was given the ashtray as a funny, one year wedding anniversary gift. Her father and RAAF Pilot Rex Wilson had begun a friendship early in the war. She stated that Mr. Wilson had been killed while flying about a year later.
Sergeant Rex Kerslake Wilson, DFM Distinguished Flying Cross(Killed in action 9 December 1941.)Already considered to be an 'ace' after destroying seven enemy aircraft, Rex Wilson was one of the nine Squadron pilots who took off at 1035 hours in their Tomahawks on that fateful day to sweep the Tobruk-El Gobi area. They were surprised by six Bf 109s who bounced them out of the sun. Three Tomahawks went down and two more were damaged but stayed on to fight. Both Rex and FlyingOfficer David Rutter were in two of those which went down and both were killed.The third crash landed and the pilot later made his way back to the squadron. Rex had already been recommended for the DFM. In January 1945, it was awarded posthumously.
Distinguished Flying MedalAUS-407088 Sergeant Rex Kerslake WILSON, Royal Australian Air Force, No. 3 (R.A.A.F.) Squadron.During the advance this airman participated in an operational sortie over the Sidi Rezegh area. His formation was attacked by a large force of enemy fighters and, in the ensuing combat, Sergeant Wilson destroyed a Messerschmitt and damaged another. He then engaged and shot down 2 enemy army co-operation aircraft. This airman has destroyed 8 hostile aircraft.

Terrific ConditionHas NOT been cleaned (has been dusted), so its original, gorgeous aged patina has been left undisturbed. It was NOT used as an ashtray, but sat safely for years on a shelf. Very light wear, minor scratching (underside of Spitfire). I believe the screw has been replaced that holds the AC to the arm.
