Wear marks, desiccation crack on the back-------
Fire masks are specifically responsible for monitoring domestic fires,
that the housewives light in the courts of the houses.
When the harmattan blows, the danger of fire is great.
All fires must be extinguished during hot hours, and beware of the offender: the mask
will come up, handcuffing, to call her brutally to order,
flipping the canary containing the meal simmering on the 3 stones of the hearth.
In addition, her husband will be liable to a fine, levied by the head of the house
sacred village, for causing the intervention of the mask.
(see notice of Mrs VERGER FEVRE in exhibition catalog Art and Ethnography of Black Africa)
The fire mask can also take the lead in a fire or a bushfire. (Holas, 1960)
