Labelled liner, horsehair pads .     These unique helmets were the result of Ireland's struggle for independence. In the early twenties, a young independent state was faced with the need to equip its army of 10, 000 people with a statutory helmet. The Irish have recently achieved independence from England (in the war o...f independence 1919-1921). Anti-British feelings went through the roof at that time and resulted in an escalation of the internal conflict with the real Irish civil war of 1922-23. Therefore, when the Irish army of the young independent state was formed, and it took a special army helmet, the British helmet "Tommy" could not be accepted, in principle, as the helmet of the enemy.  After a series of experiments with the French helmet Adrian M15, the choice fell on the same German design M16. Due to the fact that the Treaty of Versailles forbade Germany to export military equipment, it was found the option of manufacturing helmets in England, at the factory Vickers Ltd , wherever the captured production equipment for the production of German helmets. Thus was born the contract 10, 021 helmet, which was called the Model 27 or M27. The helmets were made of lower quality steel than the German M16 and were noticeably lighter. Its protective properties were very modest. The M27 was a statutory military helmet from 1927 to 1939.
