Bound in green publisher's cloth, gilt lettering stamped on front cover with color-tinted lithograph of USS Alabama (BB-60) mounted on front cover. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards v...ery lightly rubbed and worn.
First edition of this scarce World War II U.S. Navy cruise book prepared and compiled while the USS Alabama (BB-60) was in dry dock in Bremerton, WA from Jan. through March, 1945 for refitting and repairs. The USS Alabama after launching in 1943 engaged in North Atlantic convoy operations with the Royal Navy, was transferred to the South Pacific where it supported the capture of the Gilbert Islands, bombardment of the Kwajalein Atoll, invasion of Saipan and the Marianas, raids on Truk, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea, later nicknamed the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot." Of special note is one of the final images showing the African-American "W Division" or weapons division, including an African-American officer. The USS Alabama continues as a museum ship at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, AL.OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
