Late 19th century sampler by Sarah Ellen Bones aged 9 - 1879, Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat-ish stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns all underlined with a meandering floral border. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a further set of alphabet letters with a central fruit basket beneath which has two birds perched on top. The basket is flan...ked by a further fruit basket and crucifix. Sarah Ellen's details and the date of 1879 are stitched in the lower section of the gauze with a tree and tree urn plus birds to their left and right. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with patches of brown staining. This is due to glue on the reverse of the sampler which is showing through on the front. The colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss, particularly to the row of numbers above the red floral border. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah Ellen first stitched it. This photograph also shows the old glue residue mentioned earlier. When I acquired the sampler it was glued down onto a badly damaged piece of card so I decided to remove it. As a consequence, there are areas of slight tackiness from the glue residue on the back of the sampler. Measures 17" across x 16" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
