This is a rare BUGGY BLANKET in an OWL pattern with the 5/A Essex Square Baker label. Most likely mohair. 1859-1866 S.W. Baker Company and then Ayres & Sons owned the Baker brand name, and a "Baker Blanket", a horse blanket, was first advertised in their catalog with the newly branded "5/A" trademark. The original Baker Co was sold and resold to larger mills over the years. In 1990, the "5/A" trademark was purchased by Curvon Horse ...Clothing Company.
These 19th C to early 20th C Carriage or Lap Robes were used for warmth in Horse & Buggy Carriage & early unheated Automobiles. Today- use as a great decorating item for a vintage auto or make a wonderful piece of wall art or as an attractive throw on a sofa or bed. The blanket measures approximately 46" x60."
